Some areas in the game enable the player to explore them in an isometric view, allowing Tomba to move around freely. Tomba is capable of moving left and right across the screen, although he can occasionally move between the foreground and background and explore each as separate areas. The semi-open world can be explored freely once the areas are unlocked as the story progresses. The player controls the titular character Tomba, who must explore his home island, defeat the evil Koma Pigs and recover his grandfather’s golden bracelet. Tomba! is a platform-adventure game with RPG elements. Despite the game’s lackluster commercial performance, it was followed by a sequel in 1999, Tomba! 2: The Evil Swine Return, and would maintain a cult following years after its release. It was also re-released on the PlayStation Network in the early 2010s. Tomba! was received positively by critics, with particular praise going to the visuals and varied objective-based gameplay, with more mixed reception directed toward the audio.
The game centers on the exploits of a pink-haired feral child named Tomba as he attempts to recover his grandfather’s bracelet from a race of anthropomorphic and antagonistic pigs. Lead designer and producer Tokuro Fujiwara established Whoopee Camp and led the development of Tomba! after leaving Capcom in 1995. One of the most critically acclaimed features about the game is that all the sub-quests are different, eliminating repetition and keeping gameplay fresh from beginning to end. This is what truly makes Tomba! a unique and classic PlayStation platformer. Collecting more and more Adventure Points (AP) enables your wild jungle boy to pass through numerous area zones in the game. Also intriguing is that Tomba!’s gameplay is structured around earning Adventure Points by completing certain tasks such as helping trapped villagers or finding a lost item in a cave. The combination of unique 2D sprite and 3D backgrounds for Tomba! are great examples of game art at its finest in the late 90s, and remains visually pleasing even to this day. He’ll be using numerous weapons such as boomerangs and a large mace to overthrow a wide range of foes from evil pigs, spiders and large forest creatures.
